Introduction: Todd Pearson

Emily Gull is a member of FCCLA. Each student involved must complete a project that identifies a problem and  a solution. Emily identified a problem with college preparedness for high school students. Emily felt that she was not prepared for college and thought more help and assistance at the high school level is needed.

To look at the problem, Emily sent out a survey to students. There were 178 responses, spilt fairly evenly between grade levels. The majority of respondents noted wanting to attend UW after high school. The survey also asked students to correctly identify the cost of UW tuition. Forty-six percent of respondents did this correctly.

Emily noticed that students were unsure about scholarship offerings, in terms of where to find them, and how to apply. While LHS provides a list on its counseling website, it could be an easier system. Emily was also interested in how students could learn more about internships and that application process.

Another suggestion was tours of UW, as well as more assistance with ACT preparation. There have also been issues with Hathaway eligibility in terms of students making it to senior year and realizing they do not have all the required classes.

Response: Michelle Johnson

Response: The Rotary Club of Laramie will make a donation to the public library children’s book fund in the speaker’s name.
