Program: UW Dorms Update, Matt Newman
Introduction: Murray Schroeder
Newman talked mainly about the two new residence halls being built, as well as the UW master plan. The two dorms are off 15th Street. One is 5 stories and one is 6 stories.
These will have 960 beds and an 850-seat dining facility. The new dorms are designed to replace beds at UW, meaning the old dorms that are no longer needed will be decommissioned.
These building have been in the works for over 10 years to build a more cohesive campus. Improvements to student housing have been found to attract new students and retain students more effectively.
The utilities master plan is factored into these building. The steam tunnel systems are not as efficient as a hot water system. Small satellite plants will be used instead of the large plant.
The West Campus Satellite Plant is at 13th and Bradley. It houses boilers and cooling system. This plan feeds into many of the large building on Lewis and on main campus. Ninth Street is currently being worked on to distribute these utilities.
The Ivinson parking garage was built to support buildings and done strategically to provide more parking. UW is also working on parking on the north side. The UW Police Department is now located here. The transit main facility has moved.
The style of the dorms is a mix of single, double, double semi-suites, and single-occupancy community restrooms. The best way to support students is through double semi-suites or single-occupancy community restrooms, but this comes as a higher cost and footprint. Each dorm has a common front area, community kitchens, and multipurpose spaces. The dining area is 2 stories with venues for different types of food.
The total cost of the project is $285 million.
