Introduction: Anna Cramer
The Laramie Plains Civic Center
(LPCC) began in 1878 as East Side
School, and remained Laramie High
and Junior high until 1978.
Today, run by a nonprofit organization,
the building runs at 95 to 100%
occupancy, and currently houses 98
tenants, with 138 on wait list.
Of the current tenants, 17 are nonprofit
organizations, such as the United Way
and the Wyoming Children’s Law
Center, as well as manufacturing and
retail businesses.
LPCC houses excellent spaces for
events, such as the Gryphon Theater,
the Ball Room, gyms, and a modern
conference room.
A majority of funding comes from
tenants’ rent, facilities rental, donors,
sponsors, and 10% in grants.
There is some speculation that the
place it haunted, but this has not been
confirmed!
The LPCC has come a long way since
it was revived by local partners as a
joint powers entity in 1981, and then a
stand-alone nonprofit in 2019, but it
still faces massive physical challenges.
These include the need for a new
boiler, fire alarm system, and a new
roof. Needed upgrades are estimated
to total over $20M, and staff are
continually chipping away at a priority
project list.
Current physical projects include
rehabilitation of the court yard into
education, play, and gardening areas.
The Gryphon Theater is also expanding
its bar area, which will increase
revenue.
Response: Tyler Valentine
‘Response: The Rotary Club of
Laramie will make a donation to the
public library children’s book fund in
the speaker’s name.
