Program: History of Highway 287, Bob Moore
Introduction: Christina Kuzmych
The plans to connect the Texas gulf coast to the Rocky Mountains were conceived prior to World War I but not completed until 1965. Before all was done, 287 connected Port Arthur/Beaumont, Texas, with Choteau, Montana, passing through the panhandle of Oklahoma and the state of Wyoming.
If one were to make the drive from Miami, Florida to Alaska on a diagonal, Highway 287 would comprise about 1/3 of the distance driven.
While incorporated with some sections of Interstate system (as in Wyoming from Wolcott Junction to Rawlins and in Texas in the Fort Worth area) most of the highway still passes through a lot of small towns and scenic landscapes. Some of the Texas towns on the route still have celebrations related to Highway 287.
The original route through Laramie was on the west side of the railroad tracks, crossing over where Grand Avenue is located and connecting with US Highway 30 at the 3rd Street intersection.
The “Highway 287 Ramble” airs on NPR on Saturdays and features a variety of music.
