Introduction of Program: Doug Faus

Representatives Kayla, Jody, and Jacob from Ivinson Memorial Hospital’s Project SEARCH spoke to the club.

Project SEARCH is a 9-month training program that connects students with disabilities to local businesses, in order to gain real-world experience as the students near graduation.

The program allows students to intern at different places around Laramie for work site rotations and career exploration.

Project SEARCH started in 1996 at the Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center. Ivinson Memorial Hospital took on the project because it is a proven training model and an important program for the community. Project SEARCH has spread to 300 sites since its inception.

Each intern is employed for at least 16 hours per week in Laramie. In the hospital, departments such as materials management, dietary, and the IMH Foundation have provided work experience for interns. Jacob is one of the current interns.

The program also has a classroom component for interns. During the program, interns learn numerous skills such as, team building, self-advocacy, financial literacy, and health and wellness.

The students practice job interviews and work on email and using technology.

Some of the benefits of the program include increased diversity in the workplace, increased reliability, improved staff morale, higher quality of work.

Project SEARCH is in need of business advisory and communication help. It is also looking for competitive, employment opportunities for interns.

Project SEARCH helps these students become more employable in the future.
